Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa

The Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa ( IHRDA ) is an African non-governmental organization in the field of human rights . The organization is based in Brusubi , near the Gambian capital Banjul .

History and goals

IHRDA was founded in 1998 in Banjul, Gambia by human rights lawyers Julia Harrington and Alpha Fall, who previously worked for the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR).

The main goals of the organization are to provide free legal assistance for those affected by human rights violations, who can be represented by IHRDA before national and international courts. The organization also supports human rights initiatives and educational work.

In 2012 IHRDA received an award from the African Commission on Human Rights and the Rights of the Peoples (ACHPR) for its commitment to human rights.

IHRDA has a Board of Directors , which is responsible for the basic development and strategy orientation. The board is chaired by a chairman:

  • 2003 to 2006: Alpha Fall
  • November 2006 to June 2012: Sheila B. Keetharuth
  • July 2012 to February 2015: Aristide Nononsi
  • February 2015 to October 2015 (interim): Katherine Mulhern
  • since October 2015: Gaye Sowe

From 1999 to 2001 , Fatou Jagne was Program Officer at (IHRDA) in Banjul (Gambia).
