Naceesay Salla-Wadda

Naceesay Salla-Wadda (often incorrectly Sallah ; also Na Ceesay or Naa Ceesay, born on October 27, 1971 in Bathurst (now Banjul )) is a Gambian lawyer.

Salla-Wadda was born to Muhammadou Demba Salla (MD Salla, 1913–2015) and his wife Amie Gaye Salla (d. 2014), who married in 1943. Her father was a teacher and principal at Armitage High School in Georgetown (now Janjanbureh ) in the 1950s .

Salla-Wadda was the youngest of the family's thirteen children and had six older sisters and six older brothers. Her siblings include Haddy A. Salla, a former manager at the Central Bank of Gambia ; Sheikh Tijan MD Salla, former teacher and Ndey Yassin Jagne (d. 2004).

Education and career

She attended Gambia High School (now the Gambia Senior Secondary School ), which she graduated in 1992. From December 1994 she was employed in the public service as a legal clerk . From September 1994 to June 1997 she studied law at Anglia Polytechnic University and received a Bachelor of Laws . She was then a public prosecutor until September 1998 . In 1998/1999 she continued her education at the Sierra Leone Law School . In 1999 she was admitted to the Gambia to practice law.

From December 1999 to the end of 2001 she was State Counsel , from 2002 Senior State Counsel and from 2004 Principal State Counsel . From April 2005 to December 2005 she was Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions , then Acting Solicitor General and Legal Secretary until September 2006 .

Between September 2006 and September 2007 she obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) at the London Metropolitan University as part of a Chevening Scholarship .

From October 2007 she was a judge at the Gambian High Court . A discharge from the judge's office in September 2008 was reversed a few weeks later. It has been suggested to be related to a verdict that met President Yahya Jammeh's dissatisfaction .

In 2010 she was awarded the Order of the Republic of The Gambia by President Yahya Jammeh at the member level .

She was on the Court of Appeal from January 2011 until August 2016 when she was released again. She was reinstated in office in May 2017 after Adama Barrow took over government .

In 2013 she was elected by the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) as Commissioner to the African Union Commission on International Law (AUCIL).

Since October 2017, she has headed the human rights organization Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) as the successor to Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie .
