Amie Bensouda

Amie Bensouda ( Amie Ndoungou Drammeh Bensouda , born July 9, 1957 in Basse ) is a Gambian lawyer and politician.

Amie Bensouda, née Drammeh, is the daughter of Alagie Seihou Drammeh , whose father came from Sabegi and later settled in Bakau . Her mother Aji Mariama Jammeh was from Bakindick . Her brother Habib Drammeh is also a politician.

She is married to Ahmed Bensouda , who worked as a ministerial advisor, most recently in the finance ministry, until the coup by Yahya Jammeh in 1994. She has several children with him. Her third son Talib Ahmed Bensouda (born 1986) is a politician and was elected Lord Mayor of Kanifing Municipality in 2018 . Her son (Abdul) Aziz Bensouda also works as a lawyer.

Career

She earned a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nigeria and then studied at the Nigeria Law School and the Kenya School of Law .

In 1981 she was admitted to the bar in The Gambia and Nigeria and worked in the civil service. From 1990 to 1995 she was the first woman to be Solicitor General and in July and August 1994, after the coup of Yahya Jammeh, she was Attorney General and Minister of Justice for a short time .

In 1995 she founded her own law firm. She specialized in human rights and defended Isatou Touray , among others . The future Minister of the Interior , Mai Fatty, was her collaborator at times.

From 2005 to 2012 she headed the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa . Followed her there, Janet Sallah-Njie in office.

She was also a long two terms President of the Bar Association Gambia Bar Association and since 2006 holder of the Order of the Republic of The Gambia in the stage members .

From July 2017 to 2019, she was Principal Attorney for the Janneh Commission , a committee of inquiry set up by the Barrow administration to investigate the financial activities of longtime President Yahya Jammeh . In July 2018, Mamadi Kurang, secretary of the committee, accused Bensouda of misconduct in her activities. Since the allegations, according to Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou, were unfounded, he was subsequently released. In addition, allegations have been raised that she herself participated in the embezzlement of funds and was a beneficiary of Jammeh's government.
