Josef Hackforth

Josef Hackforth (born January 6, 1949 in Wanne-Eickel ) is a German communication scientist and university professor . He was described by his student Michael Schaffrath as the " Nestor of national and international sports journalism".

Life

The son of an engineer studied journalism, psychology and history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1969 . In addition, after completing a traineeship, he worked as a freelance journalist. In 1974, his doctoral thesis was accepted in Münster, the title of his work was "Sport on television a contribution to sports journalism with special consideration of German television (ARD) and the second German television (ZDF) in the period from 1952 to 1972". Between 1974 and 1980 Hackforth held a position at the Institute for Journalism at the University of Münster as a research assistant or later as an academic adviser. In 1977 he was visiting professor in the United States . Hackforth completed his habilitation (title: “New Media - New Forms of Communication?”) In 1980 and worked as a private lecturer before he took up a professorship for journalism and communication studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in 1982.

In 1985 and 1986 he was visiting professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1991 Hackforth moved to the German Sport University Cologne , where he took over a professorship for sports journalism and was professor of the Institute for Sports Journalism, which was the first of its kind in Germany at the time. From 2000 to 2013 he was professor for sport, media and communication at the Technical University of Munich and during this time he temporarily held the position of dean of the sport science faculty. From 2011 (and until 2018) Hackforth also worked at the private Munich Business School as a course director in the field of business, sports and communication. During his academic career, he stayed several times as a visiting professor in Korea .

In addition to his duties at the university level, Hackforth was the head of the German Sports Journalists School, he chaired the media committee of the German Sports Association , was a member of the World Council for Sports Science, was a curator at the Philipp Lahm Foundation and, from 2007, a consultant for the sports goods manufacturer Adidas and called the Fair Play Prize for Sports Journalism and the Sports Barometer.

Sports communication, sports journalism and sports marketing were among the focal points of his research. Important publications were "Sport und Massenmedien" (1978), "Freizeit, Sport, Medien" (1985), "ABC des Sportjournalismus" (1994) as well as the multiple published "Handbuch der Sportkommunikation", which has been translated into several languages.

He led several research projects, including "Sport on Radio" (1993 to 1996), "Local Sports Reporting" (1995/1996), "Media Images. The presentation of the sport at home and abroad. An intercultural and comparative study ”(1994 to 1997) and“ 50 Years of Sport in North Rhine-Westphalia ”(1996/1997).
