Instituto Nacional de Estatística (Mozambique)
The Instituto Nacional de Estatística ( INE ) is the statistical institute of the Republic of Mozambique . Among other things, it is responsible for conducting the census . It resides on Avenida 24 de Julho in the capital, Maputo . Until the inauguration of its own 14-storey new building in November 2011, the INE was housed in the building of the Ministry of Planning and Development, the Ministério da Planificação e Desenvolvimento . The INE has around 500 employees.
The INE was created in the course of the country's independence from Portugal in 1975 . After the end of the People's Republic of Mozambique in 1990 and the transition to the Republic of Mozambique, the country went through a series of upheavals. In this context, the INE was redefined by law in 1996 and its tasks aligned accordingly. Since then it has been a self-governing body with economic autonomy under the Ministry of Planning and Development.
