The Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (ICVV) is a research institution affiliated with the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas ( CSIC ) in Madrid (Spain). Its mission is to conduct research and development in the fields of viticulture and oenology, a sector of great importance to the Spanish economy .

The ICVV is a joint project. In addition to the CSIC, the autonomous community of La Rioja and the University of La Rioja are involved. The institute promotes the transfer of scientific and technological results into the economy, so that its research leads to practical applications that should contribute to the development of viticulture in Spain . The ICVV is in demand worldwide as a research and development service provider in the field of applied viticulture, it also supports university education in viticulture and oenology, especially at the postgraduate level .

Current research projects

The research currently taking place at the ICVV can be divided into two overarching subject areas, each with more closely defined projects:

Subject area viticulture

Cellar management

  • Metabolism , genetics and biotechnology of wine yeast (microwine)
  • oenological biotechnology (ur-biotech)
  • Monitoring and microbiological control of winemaking (Vinicida)
  • Chemical and sensory science of cellar management
  • enological chemistry and technology
  • Sensory analysis, oenological chemistry and technology

Each subject area also has its own research projects, usually lasting several years.
