The Intellipedia is an information network developed on the basis of the wiki principle of the secret services of the USA , which are summarized in the United States Intelligence Community . The initiators of the project include Sean P. Dennehy and Don Burke from the CIA . In 2009, both were awarded the “Service to America Medal”. The official start of Intellipedia was April 17, 2006. Intellipedia is operated under the leadership of the Director of National Intelligence .

As of April 2008, Intellipedia had more than 35,000 registered users and 48,000 articles, and a total of more than 200,000 total pages, including notes and discussions of administrative problems. As of April 2009, Intellipedia had more than 600 active authors who typically made 5,000 edits per day.

The project was originally launched by the CIA. The secret service was looking for alternative ways of processing information. The reason for this was the misconception about the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in the run-up to the Iraq war . It was realized that the public digital networks are superior to the traditional techniques of the authorities in the collection and processing of information . The wiki principle also differs from the conventional procedure in that the publication of the information precedes processing. It is hoped that this will result in a faster gain of knowledge.

The information network based on the MediaWiki software is only available via the US secret service network Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System and is not accessible to the public. The aim of the project is to bring in as many opinions as possible in order to form an inter- agency consensus .
