history

InterVarsity Press started as a branch of the IVCF, as "Campus ministry". Initially, IVP imported books from Inter-Varsity Press in the UK . This publisher is an independent publisher despite the identical name. IVP's first own publication was a Bible study guide , Discovering the Gospel of Mark , which was written by an IVCF employee and published under the name of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in the academic year 1943–1944. IVP's publishing program was formally launched in 1947, and books have been published under the brand name InterVarsity Press ever since.

In 1960 IVP's editorial team moved from Havertown, Pennsylvania to Chicago , where the IVCF's offices were located at the time. In 1965 IVP published the first bestseller, How to Give Away Your Faith by Paul Little . In 1966 IVP moved its offices from Chicago to Downers Grove, about 30 miles (45 kilometers) west of Chicago.

In 1968 Jim Nyquist became a director and Jim Sire became the first full-time employee. Soon after, IVP began to publish the works of Francis Schaeffer , beginning with The God Who Is There . During the 1970s and 80s, many of the major publications were issued, including Knowing God by JI Packer (1973), The Singer by Calvin Miller (1975), The Fight by John White (1976), The Universe Next Door by James W. Sire (1976), Out of the Saltshaker by Rebecca Manley Pippert (1979) and A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene H. Peterson (1980).

In 1984 Linda Doll became director and the following year LifeGuide Bible Studies was published; today over 10 million copies have been sold. In 1990 Ken DeRuiter became Executive Director and in 1997, after DeRuiter's retirement, Bob Fryling took over the position.

IVP built a warehouse and shipping center in nearby Westmont in 1979 . In January 1995, after 29 years in Downers Grove, IVP moved its offices to a building attached to the shipping center. Today InterVarsity Press has almost 100 employees and publishes 90 to 100 titles a year. IVP has more than a thousand books, Bible study books, and tracts in print, and ships more than 2.3 million books annually.

In 2009 IVP won several Theologos Awards .
