Interferon-γ is a cytokine from the interferon family .
properties
Interferon-γ is involved in inflammatory processes. IFNγ has antiviral, immunostimulatory and anti-tumor properties. After binding its heterodimeric receptor (from IFNGR1 and IFNGR2 ), it induces around 30 genes by activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway . Besides interleukin-2, interferon-γ is the main activating cytokine for cytotoxic T cells . It activates macrophages and induces the formation of MHC-II . IFNγ is formed in the course of the innate immune response of NK cells and NK T cells and in the course of the adaptive immune response by both CD4 and CD8 positive T cells .
Interferon-γ can be determined experimentally, among other things, by an ELISPOT , an ELISA or by flow cytometry .
