Interim pastor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An interim pastor (Latin ad interim "temporarily", "in the meantime") performs a time-limited, goal-oriented pastoral service in a church community . It is used in transitional situations in a congregation, for example at a time when the position of pastor or pastor is vacant .

History and Development

The concept of the interim pastor was developed in the USA in the 1970s to support churches in transition situations. Workers of different denominations were involved, especially those from the Presbyterian Church and from the Episcopal Church . In 1975 the Ecumenical Alban Institute organized a first conference on the subject of interim service.

There are now interim pastor programs and networks in many congregations in the United States. The idea was also taken up in other, mostly English-speaking countries. In Germany there has been a pilot project of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches since 2009 , in which the concept of the interim pastor is applied.

Tasks and requirements

The work of an interim pastor differs depending on the situation of the parish. Its main task is to support the community in a current situation of upheaval and the associated challenges.

In contrast to a vacancy representative who mainly takes on general pastoral activities, the main focus of an interim pastor is on special advisory tasks. This includes, for example, mediation in disputes, moderation in goal setting or change processes and coaching in the event of a change in management. Tasks and goals as well as the timeframe of the employment are worked out and determined with the community leadership before starting work.

Interim services are carried out by trained pastors with professional experience, including pastors in retirement. Both full-time and part-time working time models are practiced. Requirements are very good communication skills as well as leadership and advisory skills.
