history

The IHLIA was created in 2000 through mergers with Amsterdam Homodok , Lesbisch Archief Amsterdam and Lesbisch Archief Leeuwarden . On the basis of these connections, an extensive library and archive, as well as an information and documentation center for LGBT (English abbreviation for: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans . German: Lesbian , Homosexual , Bisexuality , Transgender / Transsexuality ) was created. In Amsterdam the documentation center is in the public library (“Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam”, OBA).

As early as 1971 the University of Amsterdam (UvA) had set up a department for homosexual studies ("Homostudies") with the aim of presenting the history of homosexuality. In the later years the Homostudies department of the UvA merged with the Archief en Documentatiecentrum van Homosexualität , the Homodok and the Lesbisch Archief Amsterdam , which led to the establishment of IHLIA in 2000.

The library and archive contain more than 100,000 publications: books, magazines, videos, documentations, brochures, posters and papers. The stocks are not loaned out. Interested parties can make copies and, on request, IHLIA will also compile literature lists.

IHLIA has organized various exhibitions: Monument van Trots, Faces and Phases - Zanele Muholi / Proudly African & Transgender - Gabrielle LeRoux 25 years GLBT non discrimination policy, Faces of IGLYO, Oriental Echoes, 20 jaar Homomonument , Benno Premsela We Live Here Lesbian ConneXions Gay rights activist in court and others more.

In July 2009 IHLIA organized around 30 different women's activities at Amsterdam Gay Pride . IHLIA publishes a “nieuwsbrief” about the various activities.
