The International Association for Political Science Students ( IAPSS ) is the international umbrella organization for political science students and those studying in closely related disciplines. The association describes itself as politically independent and not profit-oriented. It organizes international events such as conferences and study trips and supports political science students with in-house services.

The IAPSS sees itself as the umbrella organization of local, regional and national associations for political students and offers them and their individual members support in the form of a number of services. In addition to these services, the IAPSS acts as the organizer of many scientific conferences, study trips and summer schools . These events should help the participants to develop their skills in the field of science and also to broaden their horizons through intercultural exchange. The organization's publications, Politikon and Encuentro Latinoamericano, and the blog, A Different View , regularly publish the work of students. The IAPSS also regularly attends the conferences of other large organizations and sends delegations. These are also made up of students whose work is to be supported.

history

The IAPSS was officially founded in 1998 in Leiden , the Netherlands . However, the first ideas for establishing such an organization were discussed as early as 1996 during a study exchange between the University of Leiden and the University of Roma Tre. In 2003 the seat of the association was moved to Ljubljana, Slovenia for the first time, where a permanent seat was established. The first Executive Committee was then elected in 2004. As a result, the legal relocation to Slovenia was completed in 2005. Due to logistical considerations and the proximity to the EU capital Brussels, the organization decided to move again, this time back to the Netherlands, to Nijmegen. The new permanent seat is at Radboud University Nijmegen .

The IAPSS has over 20 members in the form of associations and also a large number of individual members. The IAPSS also maintains close contacts with other political science associations, for example the International Political Science Association, the International Studies Association, the American Political Science Association and the European Consortium for Political Research.

construction

The IAPSS consists of two types of members, the individual individual members and the associations that join the organization. Furthermore, the association builds on three important institutions. The general assembly, the executive committee and the supervisory committee. In addition, the editorial board manages the ongoing business of the IAPSS publications.

The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the IAPSS. It meets as planned twice a year and consists of all members, associations and individual members. The assembly also elects the executive committee and the supervisory committee. It also determines the long-term objectives and the annual tasks of the organization.

The Executive Committee consists of seven members. The committee takes on the execution of all tasks assigned to it. For example, it is responsible for the organization of the conferences, the provision of services for the members and the external representation of the organization.

The Supervisory Committee consists of three members from at least three different nationalities. It monitors the execution of tasks by the Executive Committee and compliance with the financial framework.

The Editorial Board is responsible for the regular appearance of the IAPSS publications.

Events

Annual Academic Conference and General Assembly

The Academic Conference and General Assembly is the main event of the IAPSS. It is organized annually by one of the association members in different places around the world.

The AC / GA is divided into two sections. In the first section, the academic conference, an important topic of political science is dealt with in lectures, seminars and workshops. In the second section, the general assembly, the annual general meeting of the IAPSS takes place. The latter determines the tasks for the next year and elects those responsible for the offices.

Academic Conferences

In addition to the AC / GA, the IAPSS also regularly organizes purely academic conferences that also deal with a selected central topic of political science. The focus here is on the work of students, who should be given a platform to present themselves and their work.

Study trips

Several times a year, the IAPSS organizes study trips to selected locations where daily political affairs are concentrated. These study trips usually last 3 to 10 days. The focus is on institutional visits and exchanges with political actors.

Publications

Politicon

Politicon is the central publication of the IAPSS. It consists entirely of academic work by students and is published quarterly - with the exception of the period between 2009 and 2011, when the concept was extensively revised. The articles are subjected to a critical review process by the members of the editorial board before they appear in order to guarantee the quality of the publication.

Encuentro Latinoamericano

Encuentro Latinoamericano is the Latin America-focused publication of the IAPSS.

A Different View

A Different View was also a long-term publication by the IAPSS, until it was converted into an online blog. A wide variety of topics are dealt with there, not only from an academic, but also from a political point of view.
