The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) is based in Paris . It was founded in 1951 with founding president Eugen Sänger as a non-governmental organization and has over 340 members from 68 countries around the world. They are led by industry, professional communities, government organizations, and learned societies.

The space agency has links to the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Institute of Space Law , with which the IAF organizes the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) every year.

In close cooperation with the United Nations , the IAF organizes the Space Workshop for Developing Nations every year and takes part in Unispace III . Together with the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the International Institute for Space Law, the IAF prepares an annual overview of highlights in space for the United Nations.

Berndt Feuerbacher was president from 2008 to 2012 . After the founding president Eugen Sänger in 1951, he was the second German to take on this post. He was followed in his office by the Japanese Kiyoshi Higuchi . Pascale Ehrenfreund was elected President of the IAF in October 2018 .
