The International Council of African Museums , abbreviated AFRICOM ( French Conseil international des musées africains , Spanish Consejo internacional de museos africanos ) is an international, autonomous and pan-African- oriented non-governmental organization , whose headquarters are on Museum Hill Road in Nairobi ( Kenya ).

AFRICOM is an abbreviation for ICOM's program for Africa (German for example: " ICOM -Programm für Afrika"), which began as a series of events in 1991 in Benin, Ghana and Togo. Under the auspices of ICOM, the transnational museum system in Africa was developed in two phases, 1993–1995 (AFRICOM I) and 1996–1998 (AFRICOM II).

The association was established during its founding meeting from October 3rd to 9th, 1999 in Lusaka ( Zambia ). The representatives adopted a statute, a three-year program and elected a board with a president and treasurer. During the development phase from 2000 to 2003, AFRICOM received fundamental support from the Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation Sida , which expanded its commitment by a further period until 2006. In the first period, other institutions participated in the financial support: UNESCO , Africalia , Association Francaise d'Action Artistique (AFAA), Ford Foundation , the Getty Grant Program and the French Cultural and Cooperation Center in Nairobi.

The goals of AFRICOM are the positive development of African societies by promoting museums in Africa and the organizations associated with them. The main goals of the organization include the preservation of the autonomy of its member institutions, professional training and regional networking through increased cooperation with one another as well as the fight against illegal trade in African cultural heritage.

The organization represents 48 African countries.
