The International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) is an international, interdisciplinary, non-governmental science organization . It was founded in 1996 by the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The IHDP wants to promote, catalyze and coordinate scientific research, capacity building and networking.

The spectrum of topics ranges from the dynamics of land use and the land changes caused by it, institutional dimensions of global environmental changes, human security , sustainable production and consumption systems to food and water issues, urbanization and the global carbon cycle , i.e. climate change . According to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , which contributes a large part of the financial resources, a particular focus is on cooperation with developing and emerging countries .

The IHDP works with several global partners: the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and the International Program on Biodiversity (DIVERSITAS). Together, these four organizations form the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). The IHDP also supports the Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START) and works with intergovernmental bodies such as the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) or the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) . The IHDP secretariat has been at the University of Bonn since November 1996 . Its staff consists of an executive director, three international science project coordinators and five other positions. Its task is to act as a distributor in the network of affiliated research centers and to forward information to them as well as to relevant individuals.

The budget was $ 1.1 million in 2004 and $ 930,000 in 2005 , to which $ 550,000 must be added for the so-called Open Meeting .
