International Political Science Association

The International Political Science Association (IPSA, French: Association Internationale de Science Politique , AISP ) is an international political science professional association with currently around 3,600 individual members. Its purpose is to network and promote political science worldwide . The organization's office is based in Montreal , Canada . The Hildesheim professor Marianne Kneuer has been president since 2018 .

History and members

The IPSA was founded in 1949 under the leadership of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization ( UNESCO ) in Paris with the aim of developing political science as an academic discipline worldwide, promoting cooperation between political scientists and establishing an international political science research community. In young democracies and developing countries in particular, the IPSA provides assistance in setting up political science research and teaching through advisory services and the initiation of collaborations. In addition to the individual members, the IPSA currently has 52 national political science professional associations as collective members, including the German Association for Political Science (DVPW), the Swiss Association for Political Science (SVPW) and the Austrian Society for Political Science (ÖGPW). In addition, around 100 research institutions are institutional members of the IPSA. For its part, the organization has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), with UNESCO and is a member of the International Science Council .

activities

The IPSA organizes world congresses every two years with up to 2,000 participants, most recently in Brisbane in 2018 . The 26th World Congress will take place in Lisbon in summer 2020 . Under the umbrella of the IPSA, 52 thematic research committees have been set up that work on sub-disciplines of political science and, in turn, organize numerous smaller conferences, congresses and meetings. In addition, the IPSA organizes summer schools for social science method training. The IPSA is also characterized by extensive publication activity. The organization is u. a. Editor of the journals International Political Science Review , International Political Science Abstracts and Participation . IPSA also publishes the International Encyclopedia of Political Science and provides a monthly newsletter with information on developments and job postings in international political science. In addition, the IPSA awards a number of prizes and awards, including the Karl Deutsch Award for outstanding political science life achievements in memory of the Czechoslovak / US political scientist Karl W. Deutsch . Previous winners were Gabriel Almond (1997), Jean Laponce (2000), Juan Linz (2003), Charles Tilly (2006), Giovanni Sartori (2009), Alfred Stepan (2012), Pippa Norris (2014), Rein Taagepera (2016) and Robert Putnam (2018).
