The International School Eerde is a joint venture in Ommen , Overijssel Province ( Eerde district ) in the Netherlands . It is the oldest international school and the only international boarding school in the Netherlands. The boarding school with an integrated day school is located in a castle from 1715, which is in the woods near Ommen.
history
In the course of its eventful history, Eerde Castle housed the Eerde Quaker School between 1934 and 1943 . Their first headmistress was Katharina Petersen from 1934 to 1938 . Eerde Castle was made available to the Dutch Quakers as a school and as a refuge for German and Jewish children persecuted by the Nazi regime. It was run as a boarding school in the spirit of the German state educational institutions until it had to be closed in 1943 under pressure from the German occupiers.
After the Second World War, the reconstruction of the Quaker School Eerde began. Due to internal disputes, the former headmaster Hermans split off in 1951 and founded a new company under his leadership at De Ulenpas in Hoog Keppel. The Quaker School in Eerde continued its work until 1958 and moved to Beverweerd Castle after Baron van Pallandt had not extended the lease with it. Hermans then returned to Eerde with his spin-off and continued to expand an international school, from which today's International School Eerde emerged. Their English language education program was originally designed to meet the examination requirements of Oxford University and was later expanded to include Cambridge University . The school has had its current name since 1959.
At the end of the 1900s the school was no longer solvent and was only able to continue teaching with financial donations from parents. In the course of 1998 the Landstede Educational Group took over the school.
At the start of the 2001 school year, the school was restructured and converted into an e-learning school, with the main focus being placed on students with reading, writing and writing difficulties and dyscalculia . Under the new management of Herman Voogd and Edward Lock, the school developed into one of the best international schools in the Netherlands. After the school made negative headlines in 2010 and ran into financial difficulties again, Bob van der Van, H. Lenoir and Jan Dobben took over the management of the school on an interim basis at the beginning of the 2012 calendar year. In spring 2012, H.Lenoir became the sole headmistress and director. On January 1, 2014, Landstede Educational Group sold 49% of the school to the Parkendaal educational institution, so that a new management and school management team were appointed, which led to Lenoir being replaced by Dennis Peek and Martin van As.
At the beginning of the 2014 school year, the school founded a "Sports Academy" for basketball, tennis and other sports with an integrated international school leaving certificate. In August, Helen Gordon was named the new headmistress and Dennis Peek became chairman of the joint venture.

For the history of this school in exile, compare: Berthold Hegner: The international Quaker school Eerde . This essay also shows that the school, despite being founded by the Quakers, was anything but a religious institution.
