The International Talk Like a Pirate Day (Talk-as-one pirate tag) is a parodic holiday . It was founded in 1995 by the Americans John Baur ("Ol 'Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy") because of their romanticized, glorified view of the so-called " Golden Age of Piracy ".

The day is celebrated annually on September 19th . On this day, for example, instead of the usual greetings such as “Hello”, wording or accents should be used according to the cliché of an allegedly special “pirate language”. It is also a holiday of pastafarianism .

At first, the whole thing was more of Baurs and Summers' internal fun. It was only when the two friends reported to the famous columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry about their newly invented holiday and he wrote a column in 2002 that other media became aware of it. This gave the idea wider and international attention.

In 2008 the American alternative country band Lambchop released the song National Talk Like a Pirate Day on their CD OH (Ohio) .
