The Internationale Handwerksmesse is the trade fair for building, renovating and modernizing and is organized by the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen (GHM). It takes place annually in March at the Munich Exhibition Center . In 2020, it had to be canceled for the first time in its 71-year history due to the corona virus. On an area of ​​around 74,000 square meters, exhibitors present a comprehensive range of services from the trade. A total of around 60 trades are represented at the international craft fair .

At the Internationale Handwerksmesse, private visitors, companies and the public sector can find out more about the quality of the craft. The fair shows individual solutions for private and professional everyday life and demonstrates the innovative strength in the craft. The main focus of the fair is on building and modernizing, tools and technology, exterior fittings and garden technology, handicrafts, jewelry and services. The trade fair offer includes several performance and special shows at which craftsmen present current topics, new products and outstanding work.

A special feature of the International Crafts Fair is the “Handwerk & Design”, which presents contemporary handicrafts, tailor-made fashion, jewelry, applied arts and design. It is supplemented by internationally renowned special shows ( Exempla , jewelery , masters of modernism , talents ), which deal with different craft topics in alternation every year.

In addition, the International Crafts Fair is dedicated to recruiting young talent with the “YoungGeneration” action show, the “AutoBerufeAktuell” exhibition, the “Paths to Design” special exhibition and the stands of the chambers of crafts. There, young people can get a taste of various trades and make contacts with companies providing training.

Bavarian State Prize and Federal Prize

The Internationale Handwerksmesse forms the framework for various award ceremonies: every year the Bavarian State Prize , awarded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology , is awarded to exhibiting craft businesses. Awards are given to above-average ideas and solutions in the "Design" and "Technology" categories. In addition, the Federal Prize , which is announced annually by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology , honors up to twelve new crafts from home and abroad for their above-average innovation and usefulness for the crafts and their customers.

history

The Internationale Handwerksmesse was first opened on July 15, 1949 by the Deputy State Director of the Military Government for Bavaria, Clarence M. Bolds , under the name of Handwerksmesse München . At that time, it gathered 820 exhibitors on 14,000 square meters of hall space. It was organized and hosted by the Association for Crafts Exhibitions and Fairs eV, the predecessor of GHM, which is still the organizer today. A year later it was renamed the Deutsche Handwerksmesse . In 1962 it was given the current name Internationale Handwerksmesse . At that time it assumed a bridging function between East and West. Despite the Iron Curtain , more and more countries from the communist Eastern Bloc presented their exhibits in Munich.

The trade fair, which should have taken place from March 11th to 15th, 2020, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Political significance of the fair

Since the first event in 1949, the Internationale Handwerksmesse has seen itself as a meeting point for craft organizations, institutions and associations from Germany, Europe and the world. Many association meetings with prominent guests from politics and business also make it one of the most important political platforms for the trade. Numerous prominent names such as Ludwig Erhard , Theodor Heuss , Kurt Georg Kiesinger , Otto Graf Lambsdorff , Franz Josef Strauss , Edmund Stoiber , Angela Merkel , etc. v. a. line up. Nowadays the Federal Minister of Economics traditionally opens the fair. The annual “Top Discussion of German Business”, at which the Federal Chancellor and top representatives of the German business associations meet to discuss economic policy issues, also attracts great public attention.

The Internationale Handwerksmesse is attracting great media interest worldwide. Every year around 1,000 journalists register to report on the fair. In addition, numerous craft organizations use the fair as a setting for specialist conferences and congresses.
