history
The IVV was founded in 1968 as an international, superordinate association of a number of popular sports clubs from Germany , Switzerland , Austria and Liechtenstein . Only then were the national associations founded, which joined the IVV and accepted the member associations that had previously been part of the IVV.
From 1972 national associations were founded in many other countries and were accepted into the IVV.
Events
Every year on May 8th, the World Hiking Day is organized , at which the participants receive a certificate. The IVV also offers a whole range of other major events, for example IVV Olympics or cross-continental runs such as the IVV World Cup.
Most of the events, however, are carried out by the member clubs of the national people's sports associations or by the individual member clubs.
Members
In 2006, national associations from 26 countries and individual member associations from a further 23 countries were united in the IVV. The IVV thus comprised around 5500 clubs worldwide.
Around 14 million registered people took part in the 7,500 events. In addition, there is a high "unreported number" of unregistered participants who make use of the organizational services of the events while avoiding the low participation fee.
