The International University Institute Zittau (IHI) was the youngest of the Saxon universities in the Free State of Saxony . It was founded on February 15, 1993. Since January 1, 2013, the IHI has been part of the TU Dresden as a central scientific institution . The basis is a resolution of the Saxon State Parliament of September 26, 2012 within the framework of the new "Higher Education Freedom Act".

The IHI as the central scientific institution of the TU Dresden offers master’s courses with the profile "Biodiversity and Responsible Management" in the triangle between Poland , the Czech Republic and Germany.

There is close cooperation with the Senckenberg Society and the Leibniz Institute for Ecological Spatial Development (IOER) Dresden, with whom cooperative appointments have been carried out.
