statistics

Access to the Internet in Armenia has increased significantly in recent years. From 6% of households supplied in 2007, the number of Internet connections rose to 39% in 2012. However, almost nothing was done to provide high-performance access for business customers during this period.

Between 2005 and 2007, the semi-presidential government tried to liberalize freedom of the press and the media in the country, but initially it did not succeed in ending the monopoly of a telecommunications provider.

Armenia was the first country after it was separated from the Soviet Union with a private telecommunications market; a Greek company had a monopoly for 13 years. This monopoly was ended by the Armenian government, so that the Armenians can now choose between three different providers.

The internet market is mainly concentrated in the capital, Yerevan , where a third of Armenia's residents live. This leads to a lack of interest in establishing reliable connections even in less densely populated areas. For the majority of the population, the price for a connection with average speed is well affordable.

The government is very careful when it comes to putting pressure on opposition members because they do not want to be the focus of international organizations. Both the government and the opposition have control over media on the Internet, whether through party leadership positions or financial support. The still existing freedom led to an increase in journalism on the Internet, which leads to many perspectives on what is happening. This change has taken place over the past ten years.

The majority of users use the Internet for social networking because it is cheaper than traditional voice-picture telephony.
