In Venezuela , around 57.9% of the population used the internet in 2016 , which is above the global average of 51.7%. The top-level domain Venezuela is .ve . Venezuela has the slowest internet connection in the world after Cuba .

Barriers to entry

Although the number of users is increasing, Internet access in the country remains scarce and slow. This problem is more pronounced in rural areas than in the capital, Caracas .

Legal disputes

  • Eight Twitter users were arrested between August and October for calling for protests.
  • Shortly after the protests, the Venezuelan government passed a law that the use of social networks was a disturbance of the public peace and thus a crime.
  • Over 1000 websites were blocked between November 2013 and October 2014. Including two large newspapers.
