The Inter-University Research Center for Technology, Work and Culture (IFZ) is an internationally active, non-university research institution with the aim of contributing to socially and environmentally compatible, sustainable, gender-equitable technology design through its research work. It moves in the field of tension between science and politics, reflection and intervention. The clients and partners of the research projects (application and contract research) are the public sector (cities, states, ministries, European Commission), research institutions and companies.

The IFZ conducts research, scientific advice and teaching in the field of tension between technology and society. The IFZ is a founding member of the German-speaking Network Technology Assessment (NTA) .

With its research-led teaching on selected topics in the field of tension between technology, society and the environment, the IFZ complements the courses offered by Graz universities.

History and structure

The IFZ was founded in Graz in 1988 as a student initiative with the aim of making technology a social project and integrating social issues into technology studies.

The IFZ is organized as a scientific association that conducts research and advanced training in all areas of technology and innovation research. There is also a connection to the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (Institute for Technology and Science Research at the Faculty for Interdisciplinary Research and Further Education - IFF ) and cooperation with the Karl-Franzens-University Graz and the Technical University Graz . 10 scientists from the natural, social, engineering and human sciences work at the IFZ in interdisciplinary project teams.

The center is divided into four research areas: Energy and Climate, Women - Technology - Environment, New Biotechnologies, Ecological Product Policy.

activities

The IFZ examines the social, ecological and health effects of technologies and products and how socially and environmentally compatible innovations can be promoted. This is to contribute to a scientifically informed and normatively reflected design of technologies.

The topics of the numerous national and international research projects range from alternative, agricultural food networks and sustainable food systems, to intelligent household appliances within the framework of sustainable energy systems, management options for improving energy efficiency in the household and contributions to active civic engagement in the energy sector, to life cycle assessments and procurement energy-efficient products, services and construction, risk assessment for genetically modified organisms, the promotion of smart IT use by young people and the increase in the participation and professional advancement of women scientists. Other projects on participatory technology design, evaluations of gender equality measures in science and technology, and queer-feminist technology and science research are also carried out at the IFZ. In many of these projects the IFZ cooperates with international partners, e. B. Institute for Social-Ecological Research , Institute for Applied Ecology , The Open University , University of Sussex , École Normale Supérieure de Cachan , Osaka University , ICLEI , Wageningen University , University of Wuppertal , often in projects funded by the European Union to promote .

The IFZ has been in charge of the international, English-language fellowship program of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS) , through which an intensive international exchange of science and personnel is maintained.

The research center published the journal Soziale Technik from 1990 to 2014 . It was the only regularly published journal for environmental and social science technology research in German-speaking countries.
