The Latin expression intra muros or extra muros (inside or outside the (city) walls) originally defines the area within or outside of an ancient city that is delimited by the city wall . The term is also used in the sense of secret or not public . Synonyms for intra muros are discrete , secretive and confidential .

Urban planning

Even today, intra muros often refers to the part of a city located within the city ​​wall , i.e. usually the old town . The old town can, however, also include historical districts located outside the city wall.

The term intra muros sometimes continues to exist as a district designation when the city fortifications no longer exist or have been replaced by ramparts .
