Invercauld Castle
Invercauld Castle , also Invercauld House , is a country house near Braemar in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . Historic Scotland has listed it as a Category A Historic Building and the property is featured on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland .
history
The Farquharson family settled in the area in the 14th century and had a tower house built there in the 16th century . A vaulted cellar in today's country house dates from this period, even though the Tower House was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. Further changes were made in the 18th and 19th centuries and in 1875 the architect John Thomas Wimperis rebuilt the building entirely in the Scottish Baronial style . There is a lot of furniture and paintings from the Victorian era in the house .
The estate
The country house includes around 520 km² of land in the Cairngorms National Park , as well as a section of the River Dee . The 10th laird, James Farquharson , had sparse forests planted over large parts of the property in order to supply the shipyards in nearby Aberdeen with the harvested wood . Invercauld's sport-friendly property and its location near the British royal palace, Balmoral Castle, made it Queen Victoria's favorite place to stay .
