Inverquharity Castle

Inverquharity Castle is a tower house about 4.5 km northeast of the village of Kirriemuir in the Scottish county of Angus . The 15th century building is near the South Esk River .

history

Inverquharity has belonged to the Ogilvy clan since around 1420. In the 1440s, the castle was first built as a tower with a rectangular floor plan for Alexander Ogilvy, 2nd Lord Inverquharity . A wing was added in the 16th century, creating a four-story tower house with an L-shaped floor plan.

In 1445 a dispute between Alexander Ogilvy and the son of David Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Crawford , from the nearby Finavon Castle escalated and came to a head in the Battle of Arbroath , in which both competitors were killed.

At the end of the 18th century, the 5th Baronet Ogilvy sold the Tower House and the side wing was demolished. The castle fell into disrepair until the 1960s, but was then restored and the demolished side wing rebuilt. The original iron grating from the 15th century is still in its place. In 2014 the BBC produced a documentary about the sale of the castle by the owner who restored it and had lived there for the past 40 years. It was sold in 2012, priced at £ 611,000.

today

Historic Scotland has listed Inverquharity Castle as a Category A Historic Building. The castle is still in private hands.
