Ioannis Kossos
Ioannis Kossos ( Greek Ιωάννης Κόσσος , * 1832 in Tripoli , † 1878 in Athens ) was an important Greek sculptor of classicism.
Life
He was born in the capital of the Peloponnese as the son of the woodcarver Petros Kossos and had already become an accomplished sculptor in collaboration with his father before he began studying at the Athens School of Art in 1847 . In 1849 he went to Rome on a scholarship , where he studied for four years at the Accademia di San Luca . After completing his studies and with a two-year break in Paris and London, he returned to Athens in 1855 and founded his own studio, which became a school for several sculptors of the following generation.
Act
Kosso's best-known works include the statue of the Greek merchant and patron Evangelos Zappas in front of the Zappeion Congress Hall in Athens and the statue of the revolutionary Rigas Pheraios in front of the Propylaea of the University of Athens .
