Iomega Jaz , also called Jaz-Drive , was a computer drive with a removable disk . Removable media came in capacities of 500 megabytes (rare), 1 gigabyte, and 2 gigabytes in the late 1990s. In contrast to the older iomega Zip , hard drives are used in the Jaz. A medium contains two disks that are processed by four read / write heads in the drive. The spindle drive is also located in the drive.

Technically, the Jaz-Drive was similar to the removable disk drives from SyQuest , but with a higher capacity and additional features: A metal band on the removable medium closes the interior of the Jaz with the disks dust-proof when the medium is removed from the drive. At the same time, the plates are blocked so that they cannot move during transport.

Jaz drives were available in internal (with IDE or SCSI connection) and external versions. Initially there were drives for media up to 1 gigabyte. Drives for media with 2 gigabytes followed later. In addition to iomega , compatible drives were also offered as second sources by APS and LaCie .

A successor drive with similar technology is the iomega REV with a capacity of up to 120 gigabytes. The REV is not backward compatible with Jaz media.
