Iomega REV was an Iomega system for data backup that was discontinued in 2010 .

The Iomega REV consists of two parts, the drive and the rewritable storage medium . The exchangeable medium is a 2.5 "hard disk in a cassette with a liquid-bearing spindle drive but without data carrier heads and the regular hard disk components. The control electronics are located in the drive.

Drives and matching, exchangeable storage media were recently available with a maximum storage capacity of 35, 70 or 120 GB (uncompressed). The drives and storage media have special devices to protect the sensitive magnetic disks from dust. The 120 GB drives are only read-only downwardly compatible with the 70 GB media, the 70 GB drives are read and write to a limited extent with 35 GB media; the 120 GB drives cannot use 35 GB media at all.

The drives were available as internal models with SCSI , SATA or ATAPI interfaces and as external models with FireWire or USB 2.0 interfaces. For larger amounts of data, Iomega offers USB loaders with a total capacity of 280 or 560 GB. The average data transfer rate, depending on the connection used, is around 20 MB / s. The storage media are formatted with UDF and, in contrast to tape drives, allow random access . The devices can run on Windows , Linux and Mac OS .

Iomega specifies the durability of the media as 30 years and gives a 5-year guarantee.

REV can be seen as the successor to the Iomega Jaz in many ways , as the technology is very similar. However, the media are not compatible with each other. REV drives are sometimes referred to as RRD for Removable Rigid Disk.

In February 2010, Iomega ceased production and sales of the REV drives. This step is justified with a changed purchasing behavior and a realignment by the parent company EMC , which sees the future of backup more in the NAS area. The distribution of REV media, however, is to be continued beyond 2010.
