Breeding history
The Iomud is descended from Turkmen horses and was bred by the Iomud tribe in the Tashauz oasis in southern Turkmenistan. He was also influenced by horse breeds from the steppe and refined after the 14th century by Arab stallions. Since the pure-bred population of the breed has declined a lot, a stud was founded in 1983 for the preservation of the breed, which aims to increase the current population size from 140 mares to 240 to 250 mares.
