Iraj Bashiri

Iraj Bashiri ( Persian ایرج بشیری Iradsch Baschiri , born July 31, 1940 in Behbahān , Chuzestan , Iran ) is Professor of History at the University of Minnesota , USA and one of the leading scholars in the field of Central Asian Studies and Iranian Studies . Fluent in English , Persian , Persian-Tajik and several Turkic languages , Bashiri was able to read and translate works that would otherwise have remained inaccessible to the mostly Russian-speaking research community of Central Asian Studies. Bashiri's career initially focused on ancient Persia and then shifted to Tajik identity and relationships between Tajiks and the Turkic-speaking Uzbeks of Central Asia.
