On February 18, 2018, an ATR 72-212 crashed on Iran Aseman Airlines flight 3704 ( flight number : EP3704), a scheduled flight from Tehran-Mehrabad to Yasudsch . The scene of the accident is in the Dena massif of the Zāgros Mountains north of the destination airport. According to the airline, there were 66 people on board, including 60 passengers , two pilots , two flight attendants and two security officers .

plane

The ATR 72-212 ( registration number : EP-ATS, c / n : 391) completed its maiden flight on October 26, 1993 and was delivered to Iran Aseman Airlines on December 12, 1993 . At the time of the accident, she was 24 years and 4 months old. The company operated the aircraft continuously until 2010. After that, the aircraft was stored for seven years and restored to an airworthy condition in November 2017 .

Flight history

The plane took off from Tehran around 8 a.m. local time (5:30 a.m. CET) and had an accident about an hour and 30 minutes later. During the last radar contact , the machine was 26 kilometers (14 NM ) north of the destination airport.

Accident investigation

Helicopter takes off to search for wrecks (February 19, 2018)

Unfavorable weather conditions, including fog and snow, made it difficult to locate the crashed machine. The scene of the accident was suspected to be about 22 kilometers north-northeast of Yasudsch, on Dena Mountain in the Zagros Mountains in Isfahan Province . Helicopters were initially unable to make out the debris of the machine from the air. The wreck of the machine was found on February 20, 2018.

On February 18, 2018, Iran Aseman Airlines initially stated that no one had survived the accident, but withdrew this report during the course of the day because, due to the special circumstances, no one had yet got to the scene of the accident.

The investigation into the accident is led by the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority, CAO. The BEA sent three employees to Iran for assistance.

In the absence of any investigation results, Iran Aseman Airlines ruled out technical causes and stated that the bad weather conditions were the cause of the accident. The CAO issued a flight ban for all five ATR-72s of the airline. The search parties were able to find 45 bodies by February 21, 2018, when the rescue work had to be interrupted due to the weather.

On March 11, 2018, the first results of the evaluations by flight data recorders and voice recorders were published. Accordingly, no technical problems have been identified so far. In contrast, speaks very much for a so-called "controlled flight to the ground" ( Controlled flight into terrain ), in which a fully functional aircraft is flown into an obstacle.

As of August 2018, the pilots had continued to descend below the approved altitude of 17,000 feet and the minimum safe altitude of 15,500 feet until they entered Mount Dena at an altitude of 13,120 feet . All 66 occupants (60 passengers and 6 crew members) were killed.
