Iran Tribunal

The Iran Tribunal is a social movement investigating human rights violations in Iran in the 1980s. The tribunal is not a formal international court . It is based on the Russell Tribunal against the Vietnam War .

background

During the Islamic Revolution there was initially a broad alliance of all opponents of the Shah, from Islamic clergy to the communist Tudeh party . After the establishment of the Islamic Republic, the Khomeini regime proceeded, particularly from 1980 to 1982, with ruthless severity against anyone who it considered to be a threat to it. There were mass arrests and executions. In 1982 alone, between 5,000 and 10,000 people were executed. Up to 40,000 political prisoners were held in the prisons. There was physical and mental torture in the prisons. In 1988 Khomeini issued a secret fatwa, as a result of which several thousands of Iranian citizens were executed without judgment . There has been no official investigation into the crimes to date.

The tribunal was founded in 2007 by relatives of victims, former political prisoners and human rights activists with the support of lawyers. While the Russell Tribunal was initiated by prominent writers, philosophers and political activists, the Iran Tribunal sees itself as the first popular tribunal to investigate state-ordered acts of violence. From 18. to 22. In June 2012, a truth commission set up by the Tribunal took the testimony of around 75 witnesses, most of them former prisoners from the 1980s.
