List of central banks

The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran ( Persian بانک مرکزی جمهوری اسلامی ايران Bank Markazi-ye Dschomhuri-ye Eslāmi-ye Irān ) is the central bank of Iran based in Tehran .

Founding history

Imperial Bank of Persia

Imperial Bank of Persia in Tehran (1900)

The Imperial Bank of Persia ( Bank-e Shahi ) was the first bank in Iran established on January 30, 1889. The bank's share capital was £ 1 million . The bank had received a monopoly concession from Naser al-Din Shah to issue Persian banknotes and therefore fulfilled the function of an Iranian central bank , even though it was entirely British-owned . The management of the bank was also entirely in British hands. The banking license was granted under Mozaffar ad-Din Shah for a further 60 years. Mozaffar ad-Din Shah received a loan of £ 40,000 in return for the concession.

Bank Melli

The British-run Imperial Bank of Persia retained its function as a central bank until 1931. Reza Shah had also planned the introduction of a modern banking system as part of a national development program. The German banker Wilhelm Bötzkes was an important advisor for this . In 1927, by resolution of the Iranian parliament ( Majles ), Bank Melli was founded as the first state bank in Iran. The first managing director of the bank was the German Kurt Lindenblatt . In 1931, Bank Melli was authorized by parliament to print the Iranian rial notes and put them into circulation. With this decision, Bank Melli, which continued to function as the state commercial bank, replaced the Imperial Bank of Persia in its function as central bank.

Markasi Bank

The separation between commercial bank and central bank took place in 1960 under Mohammad Reza Shah as part of the second development program with the establishment of Bank Markasi as an independent state bank with a pure central bank function. Internationally, the bank was known as the "Central Bank of Iran".

Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the central bank has operated internationally under the name "Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran". It is currently headed by Valiollah Seif . The main goals of the bank are to maintain price stability and support the Iranian government's economic policy. It manages the national currency of the Iranian rial , issues themed banknotes and coins, and holds the national currency reserves. The central bank holds, among other things, the collection of the Iranian crown jewels .

US government sanctions

At the beginning of 2012, the US administration under Barack Obama passed a law that tightened economic sanctions against the Iranian central bank.
