Irena Kogan

Irena Kogan (born October 1, 1973 in Mykolaiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is an Israeli sociologist who teaches as a professor at the University of Mannheim . She is currently the director of the Mannheim Center for European Social Research (MZES).

biography

Kogan studied foreign languages ​​and pedagogy at the Pedagogical Institute of the University of Kherson ( Ukraine ) from 1990 to 1995 , followed in Israel from 1996 (including the preparatory year) a study of sociology and anthropology at the University of Tel Aviv (title of the master's thesis from 1999: “ Labor Market Attainment of Immigrants from the Former Soviet Union in Israel and Canada ”). From 2000 Kogan studied on a scholarship at the University of Mannheim , where she received her doctorate in 2005 (title of the dissertation : Labor Market Integration of Immigrants in the European Union: The Role of Host Countries' Institutional Context ).

From April 2006 she was a Fellow at the Mannheim Center for European Social Research (MZES) at the University of Mannheim and from October 2007 an External Fellow there . From October 2007 to September 2009 she was full professor of sociology at the University of Bamberg . Since October 2009 she has been Professor of Sociology and Comparative Society at the University of Mannheim. Her work focuses on social structure analysis and migration research . From summer 2014 until 2016 she headed work area A, European societies and their integration, and was already a member of the MZES board as head of work area. She has been the director of the MZES since February 2020.

In addition to Ukrainian, she also speaks fluent German, English , Russian and Hebrew and in 2008 was the youngest foreign professor in Germany.
