Irene Schöne

Irene Schöne (born July 5, 1942 in Möckern near Magdeburg ) is a German economist, former politician and member of the Hamburg Parliament for the SPD .

Life

After graduating from secondary school in 1960, Irene Schöne attended a two-year commercial college . From 1962 to 1969 she worked as a foreign language correspondent and then as a secretary for various companies in Hamburg. Later she worked freelance for a brand research company and studied politics and economics in Hamburg , where she initiated and managed the first “summer college”.

From 1983 to 1987 she was an elected member of the board of directors of the Öko-Institut in Freiburg, Europe's leading non-profit research and consulting institute, and founded the “Ecological Economy” working group there.

She received her doctorate from the University of Kassel , becoming a Dr. rer. pol with the topic: "Ecological work - On the theory and practice of ecological work as a further development of market-based work".

Irene Schöne was a co-founder of the Institute for Ecological Economic Research (IOEW) in Berlin, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the IOEW.

From 1988 to 2004 she was employed as a scientific advisor for economics and finance at the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament in Kiel.

In 1997 she was appointed chairman of the environmental advisory board of UmweltBank AG, Nuremberg, Germany's leading private green bank specializing in the promotion of environmental projects. Today she is chairwoman of the supervisory board of UmweltBank AG.

The focus of her scientific work lies in the modernization of economic theory against the background of environmental crises, climate change and loss of biodiversity.

She has given many lectures nationally and internationally and published scientific texts.

Her latest book, "Fair Economics - Nature, Money and People beyond neoclassical thinking" will be published in September 2015 by Green Books, Cambridge / UK, and in October in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. It analyzes both the nature and the work understanding of mainstream economics, which goes back to the 18th century and is no longer appropriate for the 21st century today.

In 1969 she joined the SPD. In 1971 she founded a children 's shop and in 1972 she was a founding member of the Elbe-aktivspielplatz eV citizens' initiative. From 1974 to 1978 she was a member of the Hamburg-Altona district assembly for her party .

From 1978 to 1982 Irene Schöne was a member of the Hamburg Parliament. Her political focus there was on the School and Vocational Training Committee and the Social Committee.
