Iris Varela

María Iris Varela Rangel (* in San Cristóbal ) is a Venezuelan lawyer and politician with the PSUV . She has been a member of parliament for the state of Táchira since 2011 .

Life

Varela graduated from the Universidad Católica del Táchira with a law degree . She first became a MP in 1999. She campaigned for the abolition of the second chamber. She was elected to Táchira for the 2000-2005, 2006-2011 and 2011-2016 legislative periods.

In July 2011, Hugo Chávez appointed her minister at the Ministry of People's Power for penal institutions. On April 22, 2013 she was further confirmed in office by Nicolás Maduro. The next day, she announced that opposition leader Henrique Capriles would go to prison .

criticism

Iris Varela is a controversial figure. When opposition MP María Corina Machado demanded in the National Assembly that the opposition be given equal time on public television, Varela stated that Machado first had to use botox to remove their wrinkles.

The minister was mentioned on WikiLeaks when she named Cardinal Castillo Lara oligarchic hired killers .

In October 2012, she stated on her Twitter account:

"Scream, inferior ones! And buy a lot of Vaseline for Sunday, because the stick that we will put in you on the 7th will not be made of water"

Inferior is a term that Chavez uses for the opposition. In Venezuela one says colloquially 'palo de agua' - stick of water - when talking about heavy rain.

After opposition MPs such as María Corina Machado and Julio Borges were injured in the fight in the National Assembly in early May, the minister declared: The opposition in parliament has earned its own beating
