action

The biologist Dr. In a macabre series of experiments, McCabe turns peaceful, herbivorous gray-headed fruit bats into highly intelligent but aggressive omnivores. After two of the animals managed to escape, the residents of the American town of Gallup were repeatedly attacked by bats after sunset. In their helplessness, the authorities call the zoologist Sheila Casper for help. Together with her assistant Jimmy, Sheriff Emmett Kimsey and Dr. McCabe is looking for solutions. Sheila has safety nets stretched in front of potential breeding grounds. One of the animals provides them with a tracking device and releases it. But the pack kills their fellows before they even reach the cave in order to prevent the scientist from tracking down their dwelling.

With the help of a military spy satellite, the team can locate the animals in a disused mine south of the city . Sheila is considering killing the animals there by lowering the temperature and requests a cooling unit of the appropriate size. Soldiers spend the device in the mine, but are prevented from starting it by flying fox attacks.

The military leadership is now resorting to the last resort. A squadron is approaching and wants to blow up the mine. Knowing that the animals would survive, Sheila climbs into the mine with Sheriff Kimsey, disregarding a military order, and activates the refrigeration machine that has already been brought to the site. Of course, this action does not go unnoticed by the fruit bats. The irritated animals attack their opponents. However, Sheila and Kimsey can escape to the surface of the earth just in time before Jimmy blows up the only access to mine and thus blocks the way out for the aggressive beasts.

Reviews

"Uninspired, tension-free B-picture with weak special effects that doesn't even touch on the problems of uncontrolled research and modern means of mass destruction."

- Lexicon of international film

“The figures are always placed in the hard side light or in the subtle light from below in order to really take the atmosphere of the uncanny to the extreme. They are allowed to discuss the most fantastic scenarios with scientific seriousness, meticulousness and correctness. [...] If you like horror films, you will probably have fun. Morneau shows courage if, after Scream, he continues to meet all conventions of his genre. And the film is always of great scientific value. "

- André Grzeszyk

“The main problem with this horror recitation, however, is that it almost takes itself seriously. The funny final scene alone flirts ironically for three seconds with what would seriously like to be sold for an hour and a half. To be tolerated for fans of the absurd schemes, because at times it is reasonably entertaining. "

- Flemming shock

“Bats doesn't even have a hint of atmosphere, neither in the camera work, nor in the editing or the staging. [...] In the foreseeable chaos, tension only arises during the showdown in a disused mine. Otherwise, the director thinks that he cannot do without the most violent camera shake during the bat attacks. In these moments you can hardly see anything, only the fluttering shadows of the computer-generated beings. […] Unfortunately the film is neither a parody nor trashy enough to be really funny again. "
