Irish diaspora

As Irish diaspora refers to the Irish-born population that lives outside the Irish core area d. H. the western European island of Ireland , which includes the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland .

History of origin

An emigration from Ireland to a great extent took place since at least the early 17th century (after the submission and the end of the Celtic-Gaelic -dominated Ireland under British rule after the Nine Years' War and the Ulster Plantation ), in the middle of the 19th century ( Great Famine, "Great Famine" ) and (early) 20th century. In addition to Great Britain ( England and Scotland ), the main emigration destinations were the United States of America , Canada , Australia , Argentina and Uruguay .

At the beginning of the 21st century there are around 80 million people of Irish descent worldwide; most of it, about 36 million, in the United States of America. The UK has about 14 million, Australia 7, Canada 4.5 million and Argentina about 1 million.
