Irish Poker Open
The Irish Poker Open is a series of poker tournaments held once a year at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin . They are one of the most prestigious series of tournaments and have the longest history after the World Series of Poker .
history
The tournament series was first held in 1980 at Dublin's Eccentric Club by Terry Rogers . It is the largest tournament series in Ireland and is part of the inventory of European poker tournaments . It traditionally took place every year on the Easter weekend until 2016, and since 2017 the tournament series has been played two weeks before Easter. After Terry Rogers died in 1999, the tournament was hosted by Liam Flood at Merrion Casino . Because too many players took part in the tournament in 2006, they had to move from Merrion Casino to the Jurys Ballsbridge Hotel . The Irish Poker Open in 2007 had a guaranteed prize pool of two million euros , which doubled the amount from the previous year. 708 players took part, forming a prize pool of 2.4 million euros. Marty Smyth won the tournament in 2007 and a prize of 650,000 euros. In 2008 and 2009 as well as since 2016 the Irish Poker Open will be played in the Citywest Hotel . In 2020, the event was not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
