Isaías Henrique Ngola Samakuva (born July 8, 1946 in Kunje , Bié ) is an Angolan politician and the current president of UNITA , the largest opposition party in Angola.

Life

Isaías Samakuva was raised by missionaries in his homeland. He joined UNITA in 1974 at the age of 28. After the 27-year civil war , he did not take over as head of UNITA until 2003, after he was elected at the 9th Congress of his party. In 2007 he was confirmed for a second term at another UNITA congress.

Samakuva was previously UNITA ambassador to Europe from 1989 to 1994 and again from 1998 to 2002. After UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi and his designated successor António Dembo died of injuries sustained in a firefight with Angolan government troops in February 2002, Samakuva became head of the UNITA leadership and in the meantime transformed it into a peaceful opposition party in Angola around.

Samakuva was the top candidate on UNITA's list in the parliamentary elections in September 2008. Although UNITA did poorly in the parliamentary elections (it won only 16 out of a possible 220 seats), he won a seat in the National Assembly . First, the party publicly objected to serious problems during the electoral process; However, Samakuva announced in September 2008 that UNITA would accept the election result. The UNITA Standing Committee then met to discuss the outcome of the election and to confirm Isaías Samakuva's leadership. This happened on September 19, 2008. The statement went on to say that UNITA was primarily responsible for the intimidation of voters by the MPLA and its media superiority for its poor performance .

As the highest leader of the Unita today, Samakuva was elected with the task of modernizing his party so that the people of Angola could choose between them for upcoming elections to the National Assembly and the presidency.
