In 1841 Boulton began an apprenticeship with the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway under Richard Peacock . He later joined his father's canal boat business and stayed there until 1845.

He then went on to set up an engineering firm little is known about other than building at least one steam car (probably similar to that of Richard Trevithick and Goldsworthy Gurney's ) and at least one steam boat .

In 1854 he worked in the locomotive division of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway at the locomotive works in Gorton . He left in 1856 and started another engineering business on Portland Street in Ashton-under-Lyne , building and repairing various types of steam engines .

Between 1858 and 1859, he bought three second-hand steam locomotives ( 2-2-0 - tank locomotives , built by Bury, Curtis and Kennedy ) and began temporarily renting them out. Locomotive rental grew and a connection to the next railway line was necessary. This led to the construction of Boulton's Siding along the Oldham branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1864 .
