Isaac Barakat

Isaak Barakat (* 1966 in Damascus , Syria) is Metropolitan of Germany and Central Europe of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch .

biography

After his university entrance qualification, he first studied law until 1990 at the University of Damascus in Syria . Then he began to study theology at the University of Thessaloniki with a master's thesis on the childhood of Jesus in the first Gospel according to James as well as studies of the German language at the University of Erlangen and graduated in 2011 with a thesis on Patriarch Ignatius IV, teachers of the church at from the University of Thessaloniki.

He was ordained a deacon in 1999 and a priest in 2000 by Patriarch Ignatius IV . From 2000 to 2001 he was assistant to the dean and from 2005 to 2010 vice dean of the St. Johann Damascus Theological Institute at the University of Balamand , where he was also a lecturer in liturgy from 2005 to 2010 . He was also a lecturer in liturgy at the Theological Faculty of the University of St. Esprit in 2008 and 2009.

From 2001 to 2005 he was head of the Office of the Patriarch in Damascus. From 2000 to 2005 he was pastor of the Holy Cross parish in Damascus and chairman of the Orthodox youth movement. He was also Abbot of Balamand Monastery from 2005 to 2010 as the successor to Youhanna Yazigi . In 2011 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Damascus and titular bishop of Apamea .

On October 15, 2013, he was elected the new Metropolitan of Germany and Central Europe. The enthronement took place on November 24, 2013 in Cologne-Seeberg , where he is also located at the parish of St. Dimitrios. Isaak Barakat is also responsible for Austria and is therefore a member of the Orthodox Bishops' Conference in Austria .
