Isar Valley Association

The Isartalverein eV , based in Munich, is an “association for the preservation of the scenic beauty of the Isar valley”. It is considered to be one of the first citizens' initiatives to protect the environment in Germany . The association has its seat at Arnulfstrasse 60 in Munich.

history

The association was founded in 1902 on the initiative of Gabriel von Seidl in the Künstlerhaus on Lenbachplatz . His aim was to prevent the Isar valley from being destroyed. The association began with the purchase of land in Grünwald and was able to largely prevent further development of the part of the Isar valley south of Munich.

tasks

Today the association has the following tasks:

  • Purchase of near-natural land
  • Critical support for building legislation
  • Statements on urban land use planning by the municipalities
  • Critical support for interventions of any kind in the Isar ecosystem
  • Entertainment, signposting and signposting of footpaths and cycle paths along the Isar
  • Demands to supplement the cycle path network

The association owns properties totaling around 100 hectares. The network of footpaths and cycle paths maintained by the association is around 300 km long. He looks after the area on the Isar from the Austrian border up to and including the state capital Munich.
