Iscoed House is the ruin of a manor house in Wales. The ruin, classified as a Grade II cultural monument, is located near the hamlet of St Ishmael , about 2 km northeast of Ferryside in Carmarthenshire .

history

Richard Mansel, a younger son of Francis Mansel of Muddlescombe , had married Catherine Morgan, the daughter of Rees Morgan of Iscoed, in 1613, who eventually inherited the property. In 1772, William Mansel, 9th Baronet , began building a new mansion based on designs by Anthony Keck . The house was built from bricks, which was unusual for the region at the time. The bricks were shipped by ship from Bridgwater in southwest England to Kidwelly and from there to the construction site. After Mansel's death in 1804, the unfinished house and property were sold for £ 30,000 to General Thomas Picton , who had the construction completed. Whose descendants sold the house in 1919 to the architect Glendining Moxham from Swansea , carried out a series of minor modifications. After the Second World War, the house served as apartments for the community. After 1957 the house was uninhabited and fell into disrepair. The south wing was partially restored around 1979, but today the house is a roofless ruin. The interior decoration, which was partially preserved in 1958, with stucco ceilings and a large staircase has been destroyed.

investment

The Georgian-style country house is located on a hill on the east bank of Carmarthen Bay . The symmetrically laid out three-storey main house has an entrance porch and is connected by high walls with two two-storey side wings which, together with a utility wing, enclose a courtyard. The access to the inner courtyard led through an archway in the utility wing. The house was surrounded by a walled garden with a kitchen garden , orchard and summer house.
