Ise Schwartz (* 1942 in Stuttgart ) is a German artist who has lived in Switzerland since 1989 .

biography

Ise Schwartz studied art history, archeology and German studies at the University of Frankfurt am Main and at the Free University of Berlin , then from the mid-1960s painting at the Mainz University of Art . She has worked as a painter in Bonn since the 1970s , where museums and galleries became aware of her large-format paintings of expressive colors and gestures in the 1980s. In addition to a teaching position at the University of Bonn , she was involved in various national and international feminist artist groups and exhibition activities. With the studio grant from the Atelier Robert Foundation in Biel, he moved to Biel / Bienne in Switzerland in 1989 , where Ise Schwartz still lives today. As a member of the City Art Commission of Biel and in numerous exhibition projects, her focus remains on promoting contemporary painting.

Work and artistic position

At the end of the 1970s, Ise Schwartz developed large-format portraits and circus pictures in a strongly colored, photo-realistic style of painting, the expressive dynamics of which already hinted at the turn to gestural abstraction in the mid-1980s. Triggered by the Iraq war , the socially critical artist begins researching the historical conditions of one's own thinking and acting. This leads to series of images in black and white, which painterly transform private and media photos from the Nazi era and the Iraq war, for example. Sometimes condense with objects and sound. The subject of time in its various dimensions will remain the basis of the future work complexes. The achromatic paintings of old ornaments , which are in the process of dissolving, form the basis of memory or the past . The simultaneity of sharpness and blurring, of real and imaginary reality becomes the central subject of the picture. Geometric silhouettes overlay floral patterns in strong pastel tones as floating grids, interact equally and in the current work lead to strict, brightly colored, almost constructive patterns as a reflection of the interaction of time and pattern, of pattern and epoch.
