Ishihara Ken

Ishihara Ken ( Japanese 石 原 謙 ; born August 1, 1882 in Tōkyō ; died July 4, 1976 there ) was a Japanese historian with a focus on Christianity.

Live and act

Ishihara Ken was the younger brother of the theoretical physicist Ishihara Jun (石 原 純; 1881-1947). He graduated from Tōkyō University in 1907 , where he became an assistant professor. He continued his education from 1921 to 1923 while studying at the Universities of Heidelberg and Basel . In Heidelberg he studied under the theologian Hans von Schubert .

Ishihara became a professor at Tōhoku University , then President of Tōkyō Joshi Daigaku and finally professor at Aoyama Gakuin University .

He was mainly concerned with the basics of Christianity. His publications include “The Origin of Christianity” (キ リ ス ト 教 の 源流, Kirisuto-kyō no genryū) and “Development of Christianity” (キ リ ス ト 教 の 展開, Kirisuto-kyō no tenkai), both from 1972. His “Collected Works “(石 原 謙 著作 集) were published from 1978 to 1979 in 11 volumes.

Ishihara was a member of the Academy of Sciences . In 1962 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1973 . The University of Heidelberg awarded him an honorary doctorate in the same year.
