Isla Conchagüita, right

The Conchagüita is an island in the Gulf of Fonseca , it is about four kilometers south of the Isla Zacatillo in El Salvador . The island belongs to the administration of the Department of La Unión and is a canton of the Municipio Meanguera del Golfo .

In the west of the island there are two small buildings that are used as weekend settlements. Until the beginning of 1940 the island was inhabited by fishing families all year round.

history

José Heriberto Erquicia, archaeologist and professor at the Universidad Tecnológica de El Salvador , reports in his notes about the settlement on the island. During excavations he found artifacts and paleolithic petroglyphs that indicate an early prehistoric settlement of the island.

15th century

The name of the church Iglesia Santiago was found on a ceramic in the ruin . The walls of the church were built of rock and the roof was thatched. It is believed that the church was built in the late 15th century and expanded in the early 16th century.

Chroniclers of the diocese of Guatemala confirm that Father Fray Alonso Ponce and his companions celebrated a mass of thanks in the church in 1586 when they were visiting the island on their journey from Guatemala. The location of the ruin gives the impression in its structure and geographical location that it must have been of particular importance. The geometrical dimensions of the ruins floor plan are considerable, both the inside and outside of the masonry are impressive. The question of whether the church also served as a fortress in the later 17th century is suspected, but has not been proven.
