The Isla Meanguera del Golfo is the largest inhabited island of El Salvador with an area of 16.68 km² . The island in the Gulf of Fonseca is of volcanic origin and in Cerro Evaristo it reaches an altitude of 466 m above sea level.

The municipal administration on the island of Meanguera del Golfo is divided into 3 counties ( Cantones ) and 13 villages ( Caseríos ) and belongs to the Department of La Unión . On June 17, 1916, the island was granted city rights by decree of the then president Carlos Meléndez . The residents also elect the mayor and members of the administration. The population was 2398 people, this means a density of 143.76 inhabitants / km² (status: 2007 census). Mayor is Luis Antonio Dheming Almendáres (party: Alianza Republicana Nacionalista ). The island belongs to the municipality of Meanguera del Golfo . The seat of the municipal administration Alcaldía Municipal de Meanguera del Golfo is in Barrio El Centro .
Industry and Commerce
In addition to fishing, cattle breeding and agriculture that is used for livelihood, there are artisanal businesses, a hotel and other smaller retail stores. However, the shops located here only serve local trade and basic supplies. The Hotel La Joya del Golfo was built on stilts and is only connected to land on one side.
traffic
The island's residents communicate with the mainland via a satellite system. There is a small port with daily connections to the mainland port of Puerto Coquitos in La Union and boat tours to the neighboring island of Isla Conchagüita .
Worth seeing
The island's tourist attractions include the Zambullido Caves, the El Corozal, El Nance, El Majahual, Los Infiernillos (Ausoles) beaches and the petroglyphs on the neighboring island of Conchagüita.
